Kayak Course - 6 - 7km

 

Teams doing Tryathlon category do not do this section, however they do need to be at final briefing.

Full brief 7.00 am, at Wellesley College - Days Bay.
Start time - 7.30am

Course and map

Starting in kayaks on the north side of Day Bays wharf, the course is out and back along the Eastern Harbour coastline to Lowry Bay and return. Kayakers must stay within 50m of the shoreline at all times. There will be safety craft on the water.Kayakers finish on the south side of Days Bay Wharf by exiting boats and crossing the pedestrian crossing into McWilliams Park to tag their mountain biker inside McWilliams Park.

Kayakers must wear the race bib clearly on the outside of their life jacket.
I
n adverse weather an alternative course will be put in place involving four laps of Days Bay with a LeMans start. Participants will be advised at the race briefing on Saturday morning.
Where weather conditions are adverse and a team kayaker wishes to withdraw for safety reasons, the team can transfer to the Tryathlon category. But the team must alert race organisers prior to starting.

Safety

Water safety will be provided by Wellington Surf Lifesaving, with support from Upper Hutt Community Rescue. Please ensure your kayak is safe and sound for a 60min kayak.
Paddle a kayak that suits your skill and experience in coastal conditions. K1 kayaks are not allowed.
A
ll kayakers should be capable of a wet-exit in case of capsize.

Standards approved life jackets are compulsory. Please also carry 20litres buoyancy in your kayak.
IIf kayakers come across a fellow competitors in difficulty, they must stop and assist until water safety arrives. Your time will be adjusted post-race.

THERE ARE NO WATER, ROAD OR TRACK CLOSURES. ALL WATERWAYS, PARKS, BEACHES, ROADS & TRAILS ARE OPEN. ALL COMPETITORS MUST OBEY ALL ROAD RULES & TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR MOVEMENTS. YOU MUST GIVE WAY TO ALL OTHER VEHICLES, PEDESTRIANS AND WATERCRAFT.

Kayak Hire & Multisport Special

Kayaks can be hired or purchased from Fergs Kayaks in shed 6 on Queens Wharf ph 04 4998898, email  wn@fergskayaks.co.nz  or check out the website www.fergskayaks.co.nz
You need to organise your hire before the event, you can book and pay at Fergs Kayaks.

MULTISPORT CHALLENGE SPECIAL
If you book and pay before the event you can get a special hire price of $30 per boat and the Fergs team will drop it off on the day, with gear, and then return it. For that price you can also pick the boat up the night before (after 6pm) and drop it off before midday.

OTHER PRICES
They have Sunday morning courses for Basic Paddling skills  Or you can go one on one with instructor - $45 per hour (normal rate $60) plus gear charge (can organise groups up to eight per instructor)

One hour sea kayaking is $20 per hour or buy a 10 trip ticket for big discounts.
