Lord of the Rings
'Wellington was the main filming and production location for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This was shot in New Zealand between October 1999 and December 2000. Experience Middle Earth in all its diversity while you are in Wellington.
Conservation and legal requirements mean no film sets from Lord of the Rings remain. However, there is still a lot of Middle Earth to see. A Rover Rings or Flat Earth Tour will take you to the best former filming spots.

ROVER RING TOUR
We explore Greater Wellington with a focus on the film locations used during filming of Lord of the Rings (LOTR) movies. If you have an interest in the LOTR and you want a unique Wellington experience, then this is the tour for you.
We visit film locations for the Outskirts of the Shire, The Race to the Ferry, Dunharrow, Village of Bree, Rivendell, Fords of Isen, Gardens of Isengard, River Anduin, Minas Tirith and Helms Deep. We cover a lot of ground, but there is enough time to explore, recreate scenes for yourself and work out how the movies were made.
The scenery of Wellington mirrors that of Middle Earth. Come explore it with us on this relaxing day tour! Small groups ensure the fellowship enjoys a personal experience.
Self drive to Hutt Valley sites
Head north-east out of Wellington city on the Hutt Valley Urban Motorway to take in some more filming locations. On the way you will drive beside the Hutt River, which was used as the Great River Anduin. Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt was also used in filming the ancient Gondorian fortress of Isengard.
On the left hand side of the motorway, there is Dry Creek Quarry just off the main road. A huge medieval castle was built here specifically for filming Helm’s Deep and Minas Tirith.
Further on is Kaitoke Regional Park, where Rivendell and the River Anduin were set. For the River Anduin location, take the first Kaitoke Park entrance on your left after Upper Hutt which is also signposted ‘Te Marua Speedway’. For the Rivendell location take the second entrance to Kaitoke Regional Park (approximately ten minutes past the Te Marua entrance) and follow the signposts that say 'Rivendell' – there is a signpost at the actual location that gives some information about the filming.
